On Wednesday 3 September, the Minister for Education released a consultation paper inviting views about the future regulation of Australian higher education and potential changes to the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011 (TEQSA Act). Led by the Department of Education, the consultation paper is inviting views from higher education students, staff, providers, and the wider community.
Per a media release, Minister for Education Jason Clare said, “TEQSA’s powers haven’t really changed since it was created. Now is the time to look at this. At the moment TEQSA has a sledgehammer and a feather, and not much in-between. There is a good argument that TEQSA needs better tools to be able to step in and act when it’s justified in the public interest. And to be able to respond to systemic risks, not just the compliance of individual providers."
Responses to the consultation paper should be submitted to [email protected] by 5pm on Friday 17 October 2025.
