New visa protections update and survey briefing

International students are commonly exploited in Australian workplaces but fewer than 1 in 10 seek help. This could change, with new visa protections commencing 1 July. Working together, we can genuinely combat exploitation of international students in Australia.

This webinar aims to:

  • Update international education stakeholders on new protection against visa cancellation, and short-term visa following student visa, for international students who take action to address exploitation. 
  • Brief sector on important upcoming survey on problems international students are encountering at work and help-seeking decisions, to inform policy development and service provision for different student cohorts. Survey, by the Migrant Justice Institute (MJI), provides students with important information about their rights, how to access new visa protections, and referrals to support (survey open 8 July-31 Aug).
  • Explain how international education professionals can support the survey, and access communication collateral. Providers with 150+ respondents will receive confidential findings about their students.

MJI is an NGO that undertakes research and public engagement to achieve fair treatment for international students at work in Australia. MJI is led by law professors at UNSW and UTS.

Bassina Farbenblum

Co-Executive Director
Migrant Justice Institute

Bassina is an international lawyer, scholar and global expert on migrants’ rights. She is an Associate Professor at UNSW Faculty of Law & Justice, and Founding Co-Executive Director of the Migrant Justice Institute. MJI is Australia’s first national research and policy organisation dedicated to ensuring fair treatment of international students and other migrant workers in Australia and globally. Bassina previously worked as an impact litigator at the American Civil Liberties Union in New York, the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Sydney, and the Australian Human Rights Commission, as well as a commercial litigator at WilmerHale (NY). Over the past decade Bassina has led numerous national and global research teams on migrants’ access to justice and frequently advises governments, service providers, unions, UN agencies and civil society organisations globally on law and policy changes needed to protect the rights of international students and other migrants at work.

Phil has been IEAA's Chief Executive Officer since November 2011. Previously, he was a Member of the Victorian State Parliament (1988–2006), Minister for Tertiary Education, Training and Multicultural Affairs (1996–1999) and Deputy Leader of the Opposition (2002–2006). Since retiring from politics, Phil worked at Stott’s Business College and Cambridge International College. Phil is the Chairman of the Roundtable of International Education Peak Body CEOs and a member of the Tuition Protection Service Board. Phil is also a Board member of the Bennelong Philanthropic Foundation and the Bangarra Group Board.
