Pathways for international students are a key aspect of the Australian education sector. The IEAA Pathways Forum, now in its tenth year, provides a voice for the pathways sector and an excellent opportunity for networking with colleagues and sharing insights whilst learning about sector trends, innovations, and best practice solutions. 

The 2024 forum is focusing on supporting providers to plan strategically and ensure the quality of student experience as a variety of business development opportunities and models arise.

Ian Aird

CEO
English Australia

Ian Aird is the CEO of the national peak body for the English language sector of international education in Australia, English Australia. He has 25 years’ experience in the international education industry, with experience in every aspect of ELICOS from teacher, to CELTA trainer, to DoS and then in sales and marketing, admissions, operations and IT, and executive management. Ian also spent five years running a consulting firm whose services included strategy development, mergers and acquisitions, and financial performance improvement and research for government, peak bodies, education providers and investors. Ian served on the English Australia board for 8 years as well as on the advisory board of StudyNSW. He holds an MBA, a Masters in Professional Education, and is currently working on a Juris Doctor.

My name is Nitya Alexander, and I am from India. I am a recent Macquarie University graduate specializing in Marketing and Consumer Insights. During my time at Macquarie I worked as a Student Ambassador for the Future Students team where I represented the university to prospective students, particularly international students like myself. I also worked as a Student Assistant for Macquarie Business School. Now, I embark on my first full-time role as a Social Media Advisor for Macquarie University's Group Marketing team.

Dr Phillip Allen, IEAA-F

Phillip is an accomplished researcher with twenty years’ experience in using data and analytics to generate insights and drive decision-making. His expertise spans higher education and the not-for-profit sector, where he has managed large-scale research initiatives related to innovation, forecasting, and government policy. At UTS College, Phillip leads the strategic planning, insights, and analytics activities. His key focus is providing data-driven insights and recommendations to foster growth in both domestic and international markets. Phillip's passion lies in educating teams about the potential of quality market research and data in shaping better decisions. Phillip holds a degree in Economics, a Masters of eCommerce, and a PhD from UNSW, on the topic of Business Innovation.

Dr Onur Ates is Associate Director at Macquarie University College, which delivers ELICOS, Foundation, Undergraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Masters Qualifying Programs. He is a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE.

Fraser Cargill is a senior leader in education with over 30 years of experience and the Director of Global Partnerships and Recognition at PeopleCert (creator of LanguageCert Academic and LanguageCert General, high stakes English language tests approved by the UK and Ireland for student and work visas). Fraser has extensive experience in educational management, partnerships, and assessment.

 
James Flannagan

James Flannagan joined TAFE NSW as Director of International in January 2020. He has over 15 years of experience in International Education in both Higher Education and Vocational Education sectors. Since immigrating to Australia from Scotland in 2012 James has built on his educational experience in marketing and recruitment roles at providers such as Blue Mountains Hotel School, Study Group and UNSW College before progressing to his current position at TAFE NSW. In his current role as Director of International, James is responsible for the strategic direction of TAFE NSW International and leads the recruitment and admissions, pathways, student experience and transnational education functions.

Magdalena Hoeller

Magdalena Hoeller is the Student Experience Manager at the University of Newcastle College of International Education, as well as an Academic English teacher. In this role, Magdalena leads and manages the team surrounding a holistic student journey, including aspects of administration, wellbeing, engagement and success, with a major focus on pioneering new student-centric initiatives for a positive transition journey and managing student-led projects.

After 30 years in international education and training in Australia, USA, The Netherlands and Japan, and recently as CEO of NEAS Australia, Patrick supports the Global Partnerships & Recognitions Team at LanguageCert in the role of Head of Education Partnerships Australia & New Zealand.

Leigh has over 25 years’ experience working within the higher education sector where she has developed significant knowledge and expertise working in senior management and leadership roles in a diverse range of functions. Her experience spans both the public and private sectors.
