Developed in collaboration with Value Learning, this highly interactive program is designed for international education professionals who want to deepen their intercultural competence and strengthen how they support students and colleagues across cultural difference. Whether you work directly with international students or across multicultural teams, cultural sensitivity and awareness are essential for effective communication and successful collaboration.

The program introduces key elements of intercultural competence — including concepts of culture, cultural self-awareness, value dimensions, communication styles, teaching and learning across cultures — and equips participants with practical activities and techniques that can be applied immediately in diverse professional environments.

 Format:  Online live session via Zoom
 Duration:  90 minutes x 4 sessions

Program

Session 1 - Foundations

Explore what intercultural competence means for international education professionals. Examine the concept of culture, unpack the layers of cultural identity, and begin building cultural self-awareness — understanding how your own background shapes the way you see and work with others.

Session 2 - Value Dimensions

Examine how values and beliefs differ across cultures and shape behaviour in professional contexts. Explore key cultural dimensions and develop the ability to recognise and work with diverse worldviews — moving from assumption to understanding.

Session 3 - Communication & Teaching

Develop practical skills for communicating across cultural difference. Explore intercultural communication styles and what they mean for teaching, advising, and working in diverse educational environments.

Session 4 - Navigating & Acting

Build capability to navigate conflict and complexity in intercultural situations. Practise concrete techniques to suspend judgement, bridge difference, and commit to purposeful action in your professional role.

Audience

The workshop is targeted at professional and academic staff working across a broad range of roles in international education, including:

Outcomes

Frances Baxter, IEAA-F 

Executive Director 

Value Learning (Intercultural Specialists) 

Frances Baxter is an intercultural educator who has designed and facilitated learning programs for business, volunteers, students, and educators across Australia and in a diverse range of countries worldwide. Over the last decade she has designed and managed government funded projects including the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program for DFAT, and the Victorian Young Leaders Programs to China, India and Indonesia on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education, Global Competence for IES Abroad for University students in Japan. Fran is a qualified administrator of a range of intercultural assessment tools including the Intercultural Effectiveness Scale, Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), GlobeSmart, Global Competence Inventory (GCI) and the Inclusive Behaviours Inventory (IBI).

Marcela Lapertosa 

Director of Education 

Value Learning (Intercultural Specialists) 

Marcela Lapertosa is a Cross-Cultural Psychologist with a passion for fostering intercultural understanding. Marcela is also an intercultural facilitator and trainer who has travelled the world providing intercultural learning training and coaching to students, host families, volunteers, executives, and educators. Marcela led the development of multiple intercultural learning curricula to enhance study abroad experiences including the AFS Global Competence Certificate (GCC), a blended learning program for 18+ study abroad participants. Marcela has designed and managed government funded projects including the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program for DFAT, and the Victorian Young Leaders Programs to China, India and Indonesia on behalf of the Victorian Department of Education. She is on the executive team for the World Council on Intercultural and Global Competence and she is a former faculty at the Summer Institute for Intercultural Communication.

International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) 

Elizabeth brings over 15 years of experience in higher education to her role at IEAA, where she supports the administration of the flagship IEAA Fellowship program and leads Young Professionals' professional development initiatives nationally. She also serves as the primary contact for the Erasmus+ program in Australia. With a passion for empowering individuals to thrive in the world of work, Elizabeth has held diverse roles at institutions such as the University of Auckland, Coder Academy, and RMIT Online before joining IEAA. Originally from Indonesia, Elizabeth has lived and studied in four different countries, culminating in her migration to Australia in 2019.
