Learning abroad in Australia has grown dramatically over the past 10 years, with the introduction of new models of government funding as well as growing student interest. Between 2009 and 2017, more than 270,000 students from Australian universities participated in learning abroad programs (AUIDF, 2010–2018) – which is an average growth of 17 per cent each year.
It is known by many terms in Australia, including student exchange, student mobility and study abroad, but increasingly the sector is adopting the term ‘learning abroad’ to encompass a wide variety of program types.
Learning abroad has many demonstrated benefits for students, including academic development, enhanced employability, international networks and an increase in both soft and hard skills. As such, many institutions include learning abroad as key element of their internationalisation strategy.
